What is urgent care?

Urgent care is quick, medical attention for non-life-threatening illnesses, injuries, and conditions that can’t wait, but aren’t severe enough to require a trip to the emergency room.

What conditions get treated in urgent care?

Urgent care is ideal for various conditions that need timely attention but aren’t emergencies. Some of the most common issues treated in an urgent care include:

  • Acute respiratory issues: sore throat, persistent coughing, nasal congestion, shortness of breath
  • Gastrointestinal issues: vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, and abdominal pain
  • Urinary issues: pain during urination, incessant urges to urinate, blood in your urine, and urinary tract infections (UTI)
  • Minor lacerations: cuts, scrapes, wounds, and punctures
  • Injury evaluations and X-rays: Sprains, strains, minor fractures, burns, and soft tissue injuries

Urgent care is also a great option if you or a loved one unexpectedly gets sick with fever, headache, eye pain, body aches, malaise, sneezing, a crunchy cough, or other symptoms of a cold, flu, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), or Covid-19.

Should I go to the emergency room or urgent care?

If your condition isn’t life-threatening but treatment is needed quickly, an acute or sick visit at an urgent care is your best option. If you're experiencing a more serious situation, such as chest pain, severe shortness of breath, head injury, loss of consciousness, or heavy bleeding, go to the hospital or call 911 right away.

Emergency rooms prioritize patients according to the severity of need, so you could wait a long while if you go for a less severe problem like a sprain, nausea, or a UTI. Typically, you get a quick diagnosis and rapid treatment at urgent care or with your primary care at an acute visit. Comparatively, emergency rooms cost more, too, so it’s best to seek treatment for non-life-threatening concerns at an urgent care or with your primary care clinic.

If you’re unsure whether to go to the ER or urgent care, call the Restoration Primary Care PLLC office for guidance.
